Introduction:
The Smokebrush Gallery and Foundation for the Arts is seeking 2D and 3D artwork for:

SHELTER: An artistic exploration of homelessness and dereliction. This exhibit will explore themes surrounding shelter, homelessness (the loss of shelter, security, community, and belonging), and dereliction (a state of abandonment or neglect) through imagery and art. Keywords for artists’ consideration are (but not limited to): transience, placelessness, insecurity, instability, displacement, safety, refuge, conflict, war, disease, and disaster. In essence artists are asked to consider the causes, results, and perceptions of homelessness in the world today. The exhibit is scheduled to open Friday, June 6th, 2008, and close June 25th, 2008, and will be held at the Smokebrush Gallery located at 218 West Colorado Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO. This call is to artists of all ages and abilities.

Notice of Intent:

The intent of this show is to create an opportunity for artists and viewers alike to contemplate and explore all manner of issues related to homelessness. All surrounding and associated topics, perspectives, and commentaries are welcome and a panel of judges will be invited to jury the entries and select those that will comprise the final exhibition. Be advised that if your work is selected you may be asked to include it as a part of a later traveling exhibit on this topic.

Submitting Entries for Jurying:
Entries are to be submitted via the Internet to 2008shelter@gmail.com: No drop-off or mail-in submissions please.

Important Dates:

Entries due: Friday April 25th, 2008.
Notice of acceptance: Not later than Wednesday May 14th, 2008 (see www.smokebrush.org).
Receipt of accepted works at Smokebrush Gallery (218 West Colorado Ave. Suite 102 COS, CO 80903). Monday, May 26th through Friday May 30th, (Hours: 9 - 5 Mon – Fri; Closed for Yoga 9.30 – 11 Tue & Wed).
Exhibition dates: Opens on Friday, June 6th and runs through Wednesday, June 25th, 2008.
First Friday “Art Walk” Opening Reception: June 6th, 2008 (5-8pm) at Smokebrush Gallery. Open to public.

Application:

The following application materials are Due by 5pm, Friday. April 25th, 2008:

A maximum of 8 works submitted online (see specifics below under Preparing Images to Upload Online).
Include a title list with medium, dimensions, and Insurance value/price of each work (please relate your file names with the file titles so that we can easily match one to the other)
Application form can be downloaded in word or pdf format from www.smokebrush.org
Incomplete applications are automatically disqualified.
Smokebrush reserves the right to remove works if they are deemed to be different in any way from initial images submitted.
Artistic works accepted by The Smokebrush Gallery and Foundation for the Arts for exhibition in the previous 12 months are NOT eligible for submission. Artistic works previously submitted but not accepted for exhibition may be re-submitted as often as you wish.

Preparing Images to Upload Online:
Please adhere to these requirements when preparing your images.

Your images are viewed as RGB images using standard Adobe RGB 98 or SRGB profile.
The largest image dimension (width or height) should be 800 pixels with the other dimension proportional.
Save your images with a resolution 72 ppi. Flatten all layers.
Use JPG compression quality of 9 (will not affect the quality of images viewed on a monitor).
Image file names cannot have more than 25 characters. Please do not use #, $, &, periods or other similar characters as part of the file name.
There can only be a single period – just prior to the file format extension, eg: filename.jpg

Acceptance Notification:

Accepted images and artists names will be posted on the Smokebrush website (www.smokebrush.org) no later than Wednesday, May 14th.

Exhibit Ready Work:

Applies to accepted work only – not to submissions for judging.
Works must be received ready to hang in the gallery. Smokebrush Gallery and Foundation for the Arts reserves the right to disqualify any works received that are not properly prepared for display.

Sales:

Images that include recognizable faces will require a model release to be eligible for sale (unless it is already in the public domain in which case the Artist is responsible for demonstrating that this is the case). All other work will be eligible for sale. Artists will state the retail sale price of their works “as is”. Smokebrush Gallery and Foundation for the Arts will retain a 40% commission from all sales resulting from this exhibition.

Use Rights:

By submission for jurying, artists whose submissions are chosen for the exhibition automatically grant The Smokebrush Gallery and Foundation for the Arts the right to use their images for the purpose of marketing the exhibition and marketing the Foundation’s programs including subsequent display on the Smokebrush website. Artists grant Smokebrush the use of their image(s) as stated herein without further contact or compensation.
